How Do I Discern God's Will?
"What shall I do, Lord?" I asked (Acts 22:10).
God no longer appears to us in the middle of the night to reveal His will like in Samuel's case. Neither does He send the angels from heaven with a message, or send letters falling from heaven to let us know what He expects from us. How can I possibly know what God's will is? First of all your heart must be in a condition where it knows no will of its own in any matter. When we are willing to obey God's will, we have already solved ninetenths of the problem. Once you have reached that stage, you are not very far from finding out what God wants you to do. You don't allow yourself to be led by your feelings or emotions because you know it is easy to be deceived. Search the Scriptures to find God's will because the Spirit and the Word must work closely together in this process. If you listen only to the Spirit and disregard the Word, you are deceiving yourself. When the Holy Spirit leads and guides you, He always does so according to the Scripture and its basic principles - never contrary to this! You must be sensitive to God's guidance in all circumstances, because He will sometimes show you the way in conjunction with the Word and the Spirit. Kneel down and ask God to reveal His perfect will to you. Through prayer and the study of God's Word, through meditation and the guidance of the Holy Spirit you will be able to make a decision which, to the best of your knowledge, will be God's will for you. When you have peace of mind and heart, continue to pray. When the conviction grows that you are acting according to God's will, move forward in faith.
Father, thank You for enabling me to discern Your will through the Holy Spirit, Your Word and prayer. Make me willing to obey. Amen.
